In the pre-dawn hours of August 27, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Malik Sleet, a Black male from Lexington, Kentucky, was tragically cut short by gunfire. The fatal incident unfolded in a parking lot situated in the 900 block of Winchester Road. Officers from the Lexington Police Department were dispatched to the scene just before 4:00 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Sleet suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The early morning violence also left another man wounded. This second individual later arrived at a local hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. The Lexington Police Department's Personal Crimes Section launched an investigation into the homicide, seeking to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting. In the days following the incident, authorities released a video showing a large crowd of people in the area at the time of the shooting, hoping to encourage witnesses to come forward with any information.
Despite their efforts, the investigation into Malik Sleet's death has not yet led to an arrest. As of late 2025, no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting. The case remains open, and the Lexington police continue to appeal to the public for any details that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Sleet's death. Bluegrass Crime Stoppers has also been involved in soliciting anonymous tips to help solve the case.
