In the community of Covington, Kentucky, a 14-year-old boy named Amani Smith was fatally shot in the afternoon near Latonia Elementary School. The young male was a student at Homes Middle School. At the time of the incident, he was with his girlfriend, who was also injured in the attack. Amani was transported to UC Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The events leading up to the shooting reportedly stemmed from a conflict at school that had occurred a few weeks prior,
involving Amani's older brother. According to his parents, this initial incident escalated into a campaign of harassment through phone calls and text messages. They stated that they had raised concerns with both the school and the board of education, fearing that the situation would intensify. His father described the shooting as an 'ambush,' explaining that his older son had warned Amani that the individuals were waiting for him at his bus stop. Amani was on the phone with his older brother when he was confronted. His brother reported that Amani's last words before the line went silent were, “I ain't got nothing on me.”
Following the shooting, Covington police arrested a 17-year-old male and charged him with murder. Due to his age, his name was not publicly released. He is being held at the Campbell County Juvenile Detention Center. Amani's parents have expressed their profound loss and their belief that the tragedy could have been prevented had their concerns been addressed by school officials. They feel that multiple people share responsibility for their son's death and are determined to seek justice for him.
