In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Louisville, Kentucky, the vibrant nightlife of the Highlands was shattered by gunfire. It was on August 11, 2024, that 20-year-old Michael Bachelor Jr., a Black male, was fatally shot in a violent episode that claimed another life and left a third person wounded. The incident unfolded in the vicinity of the 1500 block of Morton Avenue and the 900 block of Baxter Avenue, an area known for its popular late-night bars and restaurants.
When Louisville Metro Police responded to reports of shootings, they discovered Bachelor already deceased at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
The night of violence also resulted in the death of 29-year-old Montay Wade, who was shot just minutes before Bachelor in a related incident. A third individual was also injured in the shootings but was expected to survive. The chaotic scene drew a large crowd as law enforcement cordoned off a significant portion of Baxter Avenue to investigate the double homicide. While police initially stated they were in the preliminary stages of the investigation, a local council member suggested the shootings were likely gang-related, a claim that was met with disagreement from the victims' families.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation into Michael Bachelor Jr.'s death led to a significant development. A 25-year-old Louisville man, Ramon Robinson, was identified as the primary suspect in Bachelor's killing. On October 1, 2024, a grand jury returned an indictment against Robinson, formally charging him with murder, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a handgun by a prohibited person. In connection with the second victim from that night, another man, Richie Williams, was arrested and charged with the murder of Montay Wade. The indictment of Robinson marked a crucial step towards securing justice for Michael Bachelor Jr. and his family.
