In the afternoon hours of November 13, 2018, a dispute in a North Las Vegas strip mall parking lot tragically escalated, claiming the life of 16-year-old LaMadre Harris, a Black male student at Legacy High School. The altercation, reportedly stemming from a conflict over a girl, involved 18-year-old Al'Dijon Williams. In a sudden burst of violence that unfolded in front of multiple onlookers, Williams allegedly shot Harris several times before fleeing the scene.
LaMadre’s 18-year-old sister was standing right next to him when the fatal shots were fired. Despite being rushed to University Medical Center and the diligent efforts of medical staff, Harris succumbed to his multiple gunshot wounds.
The brazen nature of the daylight shooting, which occurred near West Centennial Parkway and North Goldfield Street, left the community in shock. In the days that followed, family and friends gathered for a candlelit vigil to mourn the profound loss of the teenager, who was affectionately known by the nickname "Man Man." His mother, Sydney Harris, publicly grieved the loss of her son, expressing the deep and unending pain of his absence. On November 20, 2018, just a week after the incident, Williams was located and arrested near Tropicana Avenue and Maryland Parkway. He was subsequently charged with murder with a deadly weapon. The arrest report later revealed chilling details, including witness statements alleging that Williams had been talking about killing someone for days prior to the shooting and that he stood over Harris and laughed after shooting him. The investigation suggested Williams and Harris knew each other and that the shooting was the culmination of a prior altercation. Williams was booked into the Las Vegas City Jail, bringing a measure of progress for a grieving family and community seeking justice.
