On a Wednesday afternoon, May 3, 2023, a violent encounter in a Portland, Oregon, parking lot brought a tragic end to the life of 33-year-old Dilrajpal Singh, a male of mixed race. The fatal incident unfolded around 2:45 p.m. at the Barbur Square strip mall on Southwest Barbur Boulevard, stemming from what was described as a bitter and long-standing financial dispute between business partners.
Dilrajpal and his younger brother, 27-year-old Guriqbal Singh, were shot and killed during the altercation.
The conflict reached its deadly climax when the brothers encountered their former business associate, 21-year-old Jobanpreet Singh. Though they shared a last name, the suspect was not related to the two brothers. Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the moments leading up to the shooting. Jobanpreet was seated at an outdoor table with two colleagues when the brothers arrived. After a verbal exchange, one of the brothers began to walk quickly toward Jobanpreet, who then drew a handgun. The brothers immediately turned to flee, but Jobanpreet opened fire. He continued to shoot as they ran and even after they had fallen to the ground. Both Dilrajpal and his brother died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
Immediately following the shooting, Jobanpreet Singh himself called 911 to report that he had shot two men. Police officers arrived to find the two brothers deceased in the parking lot and detained Jobanpreet at the scene. He was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. A grand jury later indicted him on nine counts, including murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and reckless endangerment. The case proceeded to trial, where Jobanpreet claimed he acted in self-defense.
In August 2025, a Multnomah County jury found Jobanpreet Singh guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Dilrajpal Singh and first-degree manslaughter for the killing of Guriqbal Singh. He was also convicted on several other charges, including unlawful use of a weapon. In October 2025, a judge sentenced him to life in prison for the murder, with an additional ten years to be served consecutively for the manslaughter conviction. He will be eligible for parole after serving a total of 35 years.
