In the early morning hours of June 23, 2023, the life of Fortressen Oserahuimen Oriakhi, a 29-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Portland, Oregon. Oriakhi, a resident of nearby Gresham, had been out with his friend, 25-year-old Isidahomen Ikhuoria, who was visiting from Nigeria to celebrate Oriakhi's birthday.
After a night of singing karaoke, the two were driving when their celebration turned into a nightmare.
Around 2:30 a.m., police officers in the Hollywood District heard the sound of rapid gunfire. Moments later, they discovered a car that had crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of Northeast Broadway and Northeast Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard. Inside the vehicle, they found both Oriakhi and Ikhuoria suffering from gunshot wounds. Oriakhi was pronounced dead at the scene. His friend, Ikhuoria, was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and succumbed to them a week later. The medical examiner later confirmed that both men died from homicide by gunshot wounds.
The investigation that followed revealed a case of mistaken identity. Detectives learned that a man had pulled up alongside Oriakhi's vehicle and fired ten shots into the car before speeding away. Through witness interviews and phone records, investigators identified 24-year-old Bennett Miller as the gunman. According to a friend of Miller's who spoke with police, Miller, who had been dealing cocaine in the area that night, admitted to the shooting. He claimed he had mistaken Oriakhi and Ikhuoria for two other people with whom he had an ongoing dispute.
On August 14, 2023, about two months after the fatal shooting, Bennett Miller was arrested in Portland's Mount Tabor neighborhood by a team of Portland Police Bureau Homicide Detectives, the Special Emergency Response Team and the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, among other charges. Miller eventually pleaded guilty, and on September 13, 2024, he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 32 years. Family and friends remembered Oriakhi, known affectionately as Fortress, as a "brilliant light" who was "full of joy." He was a dedicated caretaker for people with disabilities, and his sister described him as an "incredibly loyal brother, son and friend" whose life was maliciously taken.
