On October 15, 2023, 26-year-old Portland resident Cali M. Bolden was fatally shot near the intersection of Southeast Foster Road and 86th Avenue. Officers responding to the scene around 4 a.m. found three individuals with gunshot wounds; Bolden was pronounced dead on-site, while the other two victims were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Bolden was a devoted mother to three young children, aged 8 years, 2 years, and 10 months at the time of her death.
Tragically, her husband had passed away unexpectedly from an asthma attack approximately a year prior, leaving the children without both parents in a short span of time.
Described by her family as having a 'bright spitfire personality,' Bolden worked as a senior home caregiver, dedicating her life to helping others. Her mother, Melissa Greely, recalled her as a happy person with many friends, emphasizing her love for her children and her passion for dancing.
In August 2024, nearly a year after the incident, authorities arrested two individuals in connection with Bolden's death. William A. Watson, 32, and Candice M. Hicks, 34, both from Washington State, were apprehended with the assistance of U.S. Marshals and the Criminal Investigations Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Watson faces charges including second-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted murder, while Hicks is charged with attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon. Both suspects are awaiting extradition to Oregon.
The arrests have provided some solace to Bolden's grieving family, who had been seeking justice for her untimely death. Her mother expressed relief upon learning of the apprehensions, hoping it would lead to accountability for those responsible.
The Southeast Portland community, where the shooting occurred, has been grappling with an increase in gun violence. Neighbors have voiced concerns about safety, with some considering relocating due to the rising crime rates.
