On March 12, 1976, a cleaning lady for an apartment complex in the 200 block of Northeast Sacramento Street in Portland, Oregon, made a grim discovery. Entering the apartment of 71-year-old Jean Hooper, a Caucasian female, she found the resident deceased in her bed just after 11:00 a.m. The subsequent police investigation determined that Hooper had been the victim of a violent homicide, having been beaten and strangled to death.
