In the small town of Riddle, Oregon, on the night of November 20, 2023, the life of a young White/Caucasian man, 20-year-old Devonte Lovell Clark of Grants Pass, was tragically cut short. Just after 11:30 p.m., the sound of gunfire pierced the quiet near Main Street and East Third Avenue. When Douglas County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they found Clark deceased.
Another man, 29-year-old Killian Mavity, also from Grants Pass, had suffered a gunshot wound to his arm and was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The investigation quickly focused on a single suspect, 19-year-old Gauge Douglas James Main of Riddle. Authorities determined that Main fled the scene immediately after the shooting, stealing a silver 2017 Honda Civic. An alert was issued, describing Main as armed and dangerous, which sparked a manhunt for the teenage suspect. The Douglas County Major Crimes Team, a collaborative force of investigators from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Roseburg Police Department, and Oregon State Police, spearheaded the homicide investigation in consultation with the Douglas County District Attorney's Office.
For days, the search for Main continued. Investigators believed he had traveled to Northern California, and the stolen Honda Civic was eventually recovered in Redding. The pursuit culminated on the morning of November 29, 2023, when the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the United States Marshal's Office, located and arrested Gauge Main at a residence in Redding, California. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Shasta County Jail on a felony warrant for homicide, awaiting extradition to face charges for the death of Devonte Lovell Clark.
