In the early morning hours of December 3, 2023, the life of 26-year-old Christian Jonathan Torres, a Black/African American male from White City, Oregon, was tragically cut short. A disturbance call led Medford police to the Charles Point Apartments on Highgate Street at approximately 5:40 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene in the parking lot where Torres and another man, 33-year-old Dontrell Xavier Manninen of Medford, were found with gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical aid was rendered at the scene, but Torres succumbed to his injuries in the apartment complex parking lot. Manninen was rushed to a local hospital, where he too passed away hours later. The initial investigation into the double homicide was described by police as "extremely fluid," as they worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter. Detectives began interviewing witnesses and following up on all available leads to provide answers to the grieving families.

In the days following the shooting, the investigation led to the arrest of two 17-year-old males from Grants Pass on charges of second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. It was believed they were involved in the confrontation that stemmed from a past disagreement. However, more than a year and a half later, after a weeklong trial, both juveniles were cleared of the charges and released from detention.

Further investigation and forensic analysis by the Oregon State Police Crime Lab brought clarity to the tragic events of that morning. It was determined that during a party at one of the apartments, multiple masked men with firearms, one of whom was identified as Torres, entered the residence. Torres confronted Manninen in the kitchen, leading to a struggle. Manninen, in an act of self-defense, drew his own firearm. The ensuing altercation resulted in both men fatally shooting one another. One of the juveniles admitted to firing a weapon during the incident, claiming it was an attempt to break up the fight, not to harm anyone. The charges against the other juvenile, who was believed to be unarmed, were dismissed due to limited involvement.
