In the late morning of September 8, 2022, a confrontation in west Medford, Oregon, tragically ended the life of 29-year-old Christopher Andrew Postlethwait, a White / Caucasian male. The incident unfolded on the 200 block of Lincoln Street, where witnesses reported seeing Postlethwait in a dispute with another man. During the confrontation, Postlethwait was seen swinging a metal hydro flask at the other individual.
Around 8:30 a.m., Medford police officers responded to reports of
gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, they discovered Postlethwait in the street on 10th Street, "clinging to life" with a single gunshot wound to the area near his ribs and upper stomach, which created an exit wound on his back. Emergency medical services were rendered at the scene, and Postlethwait was rushed to the Rogue Regional Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after 9:30 a.m.
The Medford Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation, which quickly led them to identify a suspect: Shawn Robert Lee Conte. A thorough investigation ensued, and authorities were able to gather enough evidence to link Conte to the fatal shooting. His capture brought a sense of resolution to the community as the legal process against him began.
Initially facing charges including second-degree murder and first-degree robbery, Shawn Robert Lee Conte, then 27, ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. On March 18, 2024, in a Jackson County Circuit Court, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison. During the hearing, it was revealed that uncooperative witnesses made the prosecution for murder more challenging. Conte expressed remorse, stating that it was "100% never my intention to take a life" and alluded to a situation filled with "stress, pressure and drugs." He is now serving his sentence in an Oregon Department of Corrections facility. At the time of his death, Postlethwait was reportedly looking forward to entering a long-term, live-in treatment facility in Washington.
