On the evening of June 27, 2024, a burst of violence shattered the routine of a North Portland transit station, claiming the life of Sean K. Smeeden, a 39-year-old White / Caucasian male. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the TriMet MAX platform situated at the intersection of North Interstate Avenue and North Prescott Street. When officers from the North Precinct arrived at the scene following reports of a shooting, they discovered Smeeden deceased on the platform.
The medical examiner would later confirm that he died from a gunshot wound, ruling his death a homicide.
The initial hours of the investigation unfolded without an immediate suspect in custody. The Portland Police Bureau's Homicide Unit took the lead, closing off the surrounding area to investigate the scene. Detectives began piecing together the events that led to the fatal encounter, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. In the days that followed, the investigation identified 29-year-old Moyasar Osman Mohamed-Ahmed as the suspect in Smeeden's death. Authorities released photos of Mohamed-Ahmed, seeking public assistance in locating him.
The search for the suspect came to a close on the evening of July 1, 2024. In a significant development, Moyasar Osman Mohamed-Ahmed turned himself in by contacting a deputy with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. After his murder warrant was confirmed, he was taken into custody and transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center. He was subsequently lodged on a charge of second-degree murder. While an arrest has been made, detectives have not yet released details regarding a possible motive or whether Smeeden and Mohamed-Ahmed knew one another prior to the deadly shooting. The investigation remains ongoing.
