On the evening of March 13, 2023, the city of New Bedford was marked by its first homicide of the year. Derek Pires, a 29-year-old male from Fall River, was fatally shot while sitting in his car. The incident occurred at the intersection of Dartmouth and Dunbar streets, where the stillness of the night was broken by the sound of gunfire. New Bedford police were alerted to the shooting at approximately 10:52 p.m. by a ShotSpotter notification.
