Shaun Michael Moran, a 45-year-old White/Caucasian male, was fatally shot on August 28, 2023, at his residence in Greenwood, Indiana. The events leading to his death began earlier that day with a series of domestic disputes with his son, 23-year-old Jacob Michael Moran, who had been staying with him. Shaun had asked Jacob to leave the home, which led to two separate physical altercations where Jacob assaulted his father.
Police were called to the residence on both occasions, but Jacob had left before they arrived the second time.
Later that evening, Jacob returned to his father's home for a third time, this time armed with a gun. Following a dispute over Shaun allegedly going through his belongings in the garage, Jacob shot his father through a window. Shaun Moran sustained a single gunshot wound to the back and was found deceased in the garage by police. His wife made a 911 call, screaming that her stepson had killed her husband.
After the shooting, Jacob Moran fled the scene. He was apprehended by Michigan State Police near his biological mother's house, just across the Indiana-Michigan state line. Jacob was charged with one count of murder, two counts of domestic battery in the presence of a child, two counts of intimidation, and criminal trespass.
On November 15, 2024, a Johnson County jury found Jacob Michael Moran guilty on all charges. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Jacob's actions demonstrated a clear intent to kill his father, while the defense suggested the shooting was a reckless act rather than premeditated. On January 21, 2025, Jacob Moran was sentenced to a total of 57 years in prison, which included an enhancement for using a firearm in the commission of the murder.
