In the early evening of January 11, 2023, Richard Donnell Hamilton, a 43-year-old male, was riding as a passenger in a white van in Greenwood, Indiana. As the vehicle exited Interstate 65 onto County Line Road, a tragic and sudden act of violence unfolded. What investigators believe began as a road rage incident escalated, and shots were fired from another vehicle, striking Hamilton.
First responders were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m.
and found Hamilton unresponsive in the passenger seat with injuries from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver of the van was not physically harmed. The incident prompted an immediate and extensive investigation by the Indiana State Police, who began searching for the perpetrator.
Known affectionately as 'Coach Nell,' Hamilton was a beloved and influential figure in the Indianapolis community. He was the founder and coach of the Indy Steelers youth football program, where he served as a mentor and father figure to many at-risk youth for over a decade.
