Bidan Mburu, a 22-year-old Kenyan man, was tragically killed on the evening of September 16, 2025, in Greenwood, Indiana. He was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a domestic dispute. Mburu was returning home from work to his apartment at the Westminster Apartments when he was struck in the head by a stray bullet. The incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. in the 800 block of Dover Drive.
Bystanders rushed him to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The shooting stemmed from an altercation between 21-year-old Isiah Q. Peak Jr. of Indianapolis and a woman inside an apartment. The argument escalated, and Peak allegedly brandished a firearm. After the woman's brother intervened, the confrontation moved outside. Peak is accused of firing at the woman's brother, but the shot missed and fatally struck Mburu, who was walking towards the apartment building. A witness stated that Mburu was approximately 15 feet behind the intended target when he was shot.
Following the shooting, Isiah Q. Peak Jr. fled the scene. Investigators from the Greenwood Police Department, with assistance from the Indiana State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service, were able to track Peak's cellphone to a hotel in Indianapolis. He was taken into custody by the Greenwood SWAT team without further incident and is being held at the Johnson County Jail without bail. The Johnson County Prosecutor's Office has formally charged Peak with murder and attempted murder.
