In the quiet, rural landscape of Spencer, Indiana, a grim discovery was made on July 15, 2024, shattering the peace of the community. The body of Malik Sims, a 23-year-old Black male from the nearby city of Bloomington, was found by a passing motorist alongside a country road. The initial uncertainty surrounding his death gave way to a homicide investigation when an autopsy revealed he had died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
His body had been left about 20 feet from the gravel roadway, with a black plastic bag placed over his head.
The investigation began to unfold when a friend of Sims, concerned after not hearing from him since the previous night, used the 'Find My iPhone' feature to track his location. The application led the friend to the very spot that police had cordoned off as a crime scene. It was determined that Sims' phone had been at that location since the afternoon of July 14. On that day, Sims had sent a Snapchat message to a friend expressing distress over a situation involving a man identified as 'QP,' who was later confirmed to be Quentin Porter Jr. This piece of information became a critical lead for the Owen County Sheriff's Office, which was assisted by the Indiana State Police and Bloomington Police Department.
Investigators soon focused on 25-year-old Quentin Lamont Porter Jr., also of Bloomington, as the primary suspect. The trail led them to Indianapolis, where Sims' gray 2012 Audi A4 was located outside the home of Porter's grandmother. A search of the vehicle uncovered blood and evidence of an attempted cleanup with bleach. Further investigation revealed that Porter had purchased seat covers and duct tape from an auto parts store, a purchase confirmed by surveillance footage. Porter was subsequently arrested on July 24, 2024, and charged with murder and auto theft. While the authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the killing, the legal process against Porter has commenced. His jury trial, after several delays, has been scheduled to begin on January 20, 2026.
