A road rage incident turns deadly In the early morning hours of July 17, 1996, a simmering roadway dispute on a darkened stretch of U.S. 231 in Spencer, Indiana, ended in the tragic death of 19-year-old Bryan E. Haltom, a Caucasian male. Haltom and his friend, Trevor Powell, were heading northbound in Haltom's Pontiac Trans Am when they became engaged in a 'rolling, verbal altercation' with an unidentified driver in another vehicle.
The situation escalated when Haltom decided to pull over to confront the other motorist.
As Haltom's Trans Am came to a stop in the northbound lane, the other car, described as a small, dark red or maroon import-style vehicle, pulled in behind them. Haltom exited his car and walked back towards the driver's side of the other vehicle. As he approached, a single shot was fired from within the car, striking Haltom. The assailant's vehicle then quickly turned around and fled southbound on U.S. 231, disappearing into the night. Bryan E. Haltom died from the gunshot wound.
The Indiana State Police launched an investigation, but the case was immediately hampered by a lack of concrete evidence. The only witness to the shooting, Trevor Powell, was unable to provide a detailed description of the shooter as he did not see their face. The vehicle was only vaguely described, though it was noted that it may have had a license plate prefix of '55,' indicating it could have been from Morgan County.
