In the late afternoon of September 4, 2024, a dispute over lawn maintenance in a Gary, Indiana neighborhood escalated into a fatal encounter. Jessica Lipscomb, a 36-year-old African American woman, was shot at a residence on the 1900 block of Noble Street. Emergency responders rushed her to Northlake Methodist Hospital, but she was pronounced dead at 5:20 p.m.
The Lake County Coroner's Office later confirmed that her death was a homicide caused by gunshot wounds.
The events leading to the shooting reportedly began when Lipscomb engaged in a heated argument with two individuals who were working on the lawn of a neighboring property. Surveillance footage from the area captured part of the verbal altercation, showing Lipscomb yelling at the individuals before the situation turned violent. In the wake of the incident, the Gary Police Department, along with the Gary Fire Department and the Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force, launched a thorough investigation to piece together the circumstances of her death.
In connection with the shooting, authorities identified 18-year-old Jaron Starks Jr. as the suspect who allegedly fired the shots that killed Jessica Lipscomb. The Lake County Sheriff's CSI unit was called to the scene to collect forensic evidence. As the investigation continues, the community has been left to grapple with the sudden and tragic loss of a neighbor over what began as a disagreement about yard work.
