On Thursday, January 5, 2023, Black male Jalen A. Williams, age 21, was shot in the 1200 block of Garden Hills Drive in Champaign just after 5:30 p.m. Officers rendered aid and rushed the 21 year old to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he was pronounced dead; an autopsy later confirmed multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators canvassed the neighborhood, collecting several shell casings and noting bullet damage to nearby homes, while the shooter fled on foot.

Within a week, detectives focused on a companion who, they alleged, had been walking with the 21 year old moments before gunfire erupted. On January 11, 2023, police arrested 20 year old Zaire Herman of Champaign, saying evidence indicated he opened fire and then ran.
He was booked into the Champaign County Correctional Center on murder charges while the investigation continued and police renewed calls for tips from the public.

Eighteen months later, the case went to trial in Urbana. Over three days, jurors heard from multiple witnesses as prosecutors argued their version of events and the defense countered with an alibi.
After roughly two and a half hours of deliberation on July 25, 2024, a jury acquitted Herman of first-degree murder in the death of Jalen A. Williams, with reporting noting the absence of eyewitnesses and limited physical evidence tying him to the shooting. The trial was presided over by Judge Roger Webber.

From the first urgent 911 calls to the courtroom's final verdict, the arc of the case traced a familiar path: a young life ended in the street, a swift arrest built from canvassed shells and neighbor accounts, and a jury that, faced with gaps in proof, cleared the accused.
Police statements at the outset underscored that the inquiry would remain active for additional leads, a reminder that, even after the verdict, the unanswered questions from that winter evening on Garden Hills Drive lingered.
