R.L. Glenn Selvin, a 35-year-old Black/African American man, was shot multiple times in a parking lot on the 2500 block of West Springfield Avenue in Champaign in the early morning hours of August 24, 2025. Officers arrived after multiple 3:04 a.m. reports of gunfire and performed lifesaving measures before he was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:33 a.m.
The initial investigation indicated two people approached Selvin in the lot and opened fire before fleeing.
Detectives quickly located a vehicle believed to have been used in the escape in the 2000 block of Moreland Boulevard and, during the same investigation, recovered two firearms. By later on August 24, police had arrested two men: 32-year-old Tyson Moore of Champaign and 37-year-old Deandre Newbill of Urbana. Both were booked on initial charges of first-degree murder in connection with Selvin’s killing as the broader investigation continued. Authorities emphasized that, despite the arrests, they were still canvassing for witnesses and surveillance footage to clarify the moments leading up to the gunfire.
Public confirmation of Selvin’s identity came from the Champaign County Coroner, who released his name and time of death the following day. Community and regional outlets subsequently noted the fatal shooting and the arrests, placing the violence within a string of recent gun incidents that have shaken the area.
