Ruben Olivares, a 36-year-old community activist and organizer from Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot on January 18, 2023. The incident occurred in the 3200 block of West Cortez Street in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, where Olivares resided. He had just returned home from his second job at La Canasta Bakery, one of his mother’s bakeries, and was getting something from his car when a drive-by shooter pulled up and fired shots at him around 6:45 p.m..
