On January 18, 2023, Jaylen Crump, a 20-year-old woman from Zion, Illinois, was fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend, Michael White. The incident began around 12:12 a.m. when Zion police responded to a report of a man attacking a woman with a gun in the 2700 block of Hebron Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found Crump, who reported that White, her 28-year-old ex-boyfriend, had struck her in the face with a pistol, causing her injury.
White, who was identified as an Illinois Department of Corrections parolee with an extensive criminal history, fled the scene before police arrived.
Following the initial incident, Crump was relocated to a house in the 1600 block of Barnhart Court at her request, where she stayed with other family members. However, the situation escalated when, around 5:13 a.m., Zion police received a 911 call from a third party reporting that White was at the Barnhart Court address and was threatening Crump. Police responded to the location and attempted to make contact with the occupants. The person who answered the door was unaware of White's presence but allowed officers to search the residence.
For safety purposes, officers began evacuating the 15 occupants, including multiple children, from the house. During this evacuation, a single gunshot was heard from inside a bedroom. Officers ordered anyone in the bedroom to come out, and eventually, White emerged and surrendered, giving up the gun he had with him. When police entered the bedroom, they found Crump dead with a gunshot wound to her head.
An autopsy performed by the Lake County Coroner's Office confirmed that Crump died from the gunshot wound to her head. Michael White was charged with two counts of first-degree murder following a review by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. He appeared in bond court on January 19, 2023, and was ordered held on a $10 million bond.
The investigation was conducted by the Zion Police Department and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. White's extensive criminal history included several orders of protection, aggravated battery, domestic battery, stalking, and other charges, highlighting a pattern of violent behavior.
