Melanie Hope Yates, a 23-year-old woman from Zion, IL, tragically lost her life on October 17, 2021. Melanie, who was of Hispanic descent, was at home reading a Bible story to her seven-month-old daughter when she was struck by a stray bullet. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on the 2800 block of Enoch Avenue in Zion. Melanie was immediately taken to Vista East Hospital in Waukegan, IL, where she succumbed to her injuries the following morning.
The investigation revealed that the bullet that killed Melanie was fired by a 16-year-old boy named Zechariah Myles. Myles, who lived in the same neighborhood, had exited his home and began shooting his rifle at another individual. Unfortunately, one of the bullets entered Melanie's home and struck her in the head. Myles was not targeting Melanie; she was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
Following the incident, Zechariah Myles was charged with six counts of first-degree murder. He was arrested about a month later in Waukegan and has been held in juvenile detention on a $3 million bail. Myles pleaded not guilty to the charges during a virtual hearing.
