On May 9, 2023, Nicole Watson, a 44-year-old mother, was fatally shot in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago. The incident occurred as she was picking up her 13-year-old son, Jacob, from her parents' home in the 2300 block of West Van Buren Street. As they were getting into their car, gunfire erupted, with bullets coming from outside the gated apartment complex at Oakley Boulevard and Van Buren Street.
