On June 19, 2023, a tragic shooting occurred in the West Garfield Park area of Chicago, Illinois, resulting in the death of 17-year-old Shaniya Robinson. The incident happened late Monday night when someone in a dark-colored sedan opened fire in the 3800 block of West Gladys Avenue. Shaniya, who was on the front porch of a home, was shot in the eye and pronounced dead at the scene.
Shaniya was one of three teenagers shot during this drive-by incident.
Along with her, another 17-year-old girl and a 19-year-old man were injured but are expected to recover from their physical injuries.
The shooting was part of a violent holiday weekend in Chicago, which saw a total of 75 people shot, with 13 fatalities. Shaniya's death was particularly devastating for her family and friends, who had recently celebrated her prom and graduation from Ogden International High School just a month prior.
Shaniya's family expressed deep grief over her loss. Her mother, Laverne Lampley, described the immense pain of losing her daughter, stating, "They crushed my family. Me and my kids is all I have... I wish it were me and not her. I shouldn't be burying my baby. My baby should be burying me.".
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The Chicago Police Department is still investigating the motive behind the incident and has indicated that Shaniya was likely not the intended target.
