Nichole Osborne Struk, a 37-year-old woman from Chicago, IL, tragically lost her life on June 19, 2021. She had a fulfilling life, having graduated summa cum laude from Johnson and Wales University with a degree in Equine Management.
Nichole was married to Brenndon Struk, and they shared a life filled with love and joy, along with their beloved cats, Colonel Macaroni and Cheese and Chancellor Tortellini.
On the day of her death, Nichole and her husband were walking in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago during the Puerto Rican Day Parade celebrations. At around 6:10 p.m., they heard gunshots, and Nichole was struck by a bullet in the mid-back. Despite being transported to Stroger Hospital and initially showing signs of recovery, Nichole's heart stopped during surgery, and she was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Nichole's death revealed that she was an unintended victim of a gang-related shooting. Angel Ayala, a 25-year-old man, was identified as the shooter. Ayala, who had a history of criminal activity, including aggravated battery and carjacking, was seen on video footage firing a gun during an altercation with a group of Milwaukee residents. The bullet that struck Nichole was intended for someone else. Ayala was arrested days later after attempting to evade the police.
In October 2024, Ayala was sentenced to 32 years in prison for the murder of Nichole Osborne Struk. He pleaded guilty to one count of murder, avoiding a longer sentence by negotiating a plea deal that specified the murder was committed with a "dangerous weapon" rather than a firearm. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago and the devastating impact it has on innocent lives. Nichole's death has left a profound void in the lives of her family and friends, who continue to mourn her loss.
