A woman who wished to be identified only as "Shorty" recounted holding Ayanna in her arms as she died, her eyes glazing over as she asked for help.
The shooting also claimed the lives of 25-year-old Antian Hardmon and a 30-year-old man, while two others were injured. The incident left the community in shock and mourning, particularly Ayanna's family, who were devastated by the loss. Ayanna was the mother of a 4-year-old daughter, who was present at the scene and witnessed the aftermath of the shooting. In the weeks following the shooting, Chicago police pursued leads and eventually arrested two suspects, Anthony Jackson, 20, and Lawrence Brown, 22. Both men were charged with multiple counts, including three felony counts of first-degree murder, two felony counts of aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm, and two felony counts of attempted first-degree murder. Brown also faced an additional charge of unlawful use of a weapon. The arrests brought some measure of relief to the community, but the pain of the loss remained palpable.
