Kimoni Franks, a 16-year-old resident of Kankakee, Illinois, tragically lost his life on July 11, 2023, due to gun violence. He was found shot on a city sidewalk in Kankakee.
Kimoni was born on November 10, 2006, to Sagondra Brookshaw and Kim Franks Sr. in Kankakee, IL. At the time of his death, he had completed his sophomore year at Kankakee High School, where he was an active member. He was also a member of the Pentecostal Power House Church.
Initially, an 18-year-old Kankakee resident named Syncere L. Prince was accused of Kimoni's fatal shooting and faced murder charges. However, during a preliminary hearing, the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office decided to drop the murder charges against Prince. This decision was made after compelling new evidence emerged from the State Police Crime Lab’s testing. Although the murder charges were dropped, Prince still faces charges related to possession of weapons and drugs, and his bond was reduced from $2 million to $250,000.
The community has been mourning the loss of Kimoni, with various tributes and memorials set up in his honor. His death has been recognized as part of the broader issue of gun violence, as noted by the National Gun Violence Memorial.
