On July 13, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred in the 1700 block of S. State Street in Champaign, Illinois. Champaign Police were dispatched at 7:39 p.m. in response to a report of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, officers found 20-year-old Jahiem M. Law from Champaign with a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound, as well as a 21-year-old female victim from Champaign with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. Both victims were provided medical aid by the officers and the Champaign Fire Department before being transported to an area hospital. Despite medical efforts, Law succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department at 9:59 p.m. due to a gunshot wound to the head. The female victim was treated and released from the hospital in stable condition.
The investigation revealed that the shooting resulted from a physical altercation between two large groups in a parking lot. During the altercation, Trevione Robinson, 20, of Champaign, produced a firearm and discharged it, fatally striking Law and injuring the female victim. Following the shooting, all individuals involved fled the area, but several were detained for questioning by arriving officers. On July 21, 2023, Champaign Police arrested Trevione Robinson for his involvement in the incident. He was charged with murder and remains in the custody of the Champaign County Correctional Center awaiting arraignment.
