Zion Staples, a 10-year-old boy from Rock Island, Illinois, was found dead in a garbage can in the garage of his family's home on July 26, 2023. However, the circumstances surrounding his death are more complex and date back further. According to the Rock Island County Coroner, Brian Gustafson, Zion died from a gunshot wound to the head, but the body had been decomposing for approximately eight months, indicating that he likely died around December 21, 2022.
During the investigation, Rock Island Police Department Detective Jonathan Shappard testified that Zion's siblings reported he was playing with a handgun and accidentally shot himself. Despite this, the coroner stated that it may never be known who actually shot Zion due to the prolonged period since the incident.
Zion's mother, Sushi Staples, 38, has been accused of concealing her son's death. She initially denied having a son named Zion but later admitted to moving his body from the basement to the garage to prevent her other children from finding it. Sushi Staples also attempted to conceal the odor of the decomposing body by placing dryer sheets in every vent of the house and in the garage.
The body was discovered during a welfare check, and it was found that Zion was wearing only Spiderman pants at the time. Sushi Staples is charged with concealment of a body, obstruction of justice, and failure to report the death of a child. She is being held at the Rock Island County Jail on $500,000 bail and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing.
The case is ongoing, with Sushi Staples having waived her arraignment hearing and requesting a jury trial. The investigation remains active, but the exact circumstances and who might have been responsible for Zion's death may never be fully determined.
