She was set to start her senior year at Schurz High School and was known for her dedication to service, often volunteering at the Greater St. John Bible Church in Austin, where her grandmother, Patty Ringo, is a member. Wilburn's death was part of a particularly violent weekend in Chicago, where at least 12 teenagers were shot, and three were killed between Friday and Sunday.
The community and Wilburn's family were deeply affected by her death, with her grandmother organizing a candlelight vigil to demand justice and call for gun control. The vigil, led by Reverend Ira J. Acree of the Greater St. John Bible Church, highlighted the broader issue of gun violence in Chicago and the need for community reform.
As of the initial reports, police did not have any suspects in custody. However, on December 11, 2023, a 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Wilburn's death. The arrest was made in the 2400 block of North Lockwood Avenue, and the boy's name was not released due to privacy laws for minors charged with crimes.
Wilburn's family continues to advocate for justice and community change, with her grandmother expressing relief that someone has been charged but also struggling to cope with the loss.
