Charles E. Hobson Sr., an 86-year-old resident of the Auburn Gresham neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois, was fatally shot on September 23, 2023. The incident occurred just before 10 a.m. in the 8100 block of South Throop Street, outside his home where he had lived for over 60 years.
According to witnesses and family members, Hobson was shot in the left thigh when he stepped out of his house to retrieve something from his truck.
The assailants, described as thieves, stole his truck immediately after the shooting. As Hobson was being taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition, the stolen truck was spotted in the back alley of his home, with the culprits attempting to return to the scene, possibly to gain more from the robbery.
Neighbors and family described Hobson as a community leader and a patriarch of the block. He was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, having owned various businesses including shoe stores and a residential and commercial alarm system company. Hobson was also deeply involved in his community and church, serving in several ministries and being named Man of the Year at St. Mark United Methodist Church.
The shooting was met with widespread shock and grief from the community. Neighbors expressed their heartbreak and disbelief at the senseless act, highlighting Hobson's friendly and caring nature. Despite his advanced age, Hobson was remembered as "spunky" and an "awesome man of God".
Chicago police were on the scene quickly and began canvassing the area for evidence and surveillance. While witnesses reported seeing police take three young people into custody, the police did not confirm whether anyone was officially in custody as the investigation was ongoing.
Hobson's death was later mourned by the Illinois House of Representatives through a resolution that acknowledged his contributions to the community and extended condolences to his family and friends.
