Dominic Dupree, also known as Dominic Palace, a 25-year-old gender nonconforming individual, was fatally shot on Friday, October 13, 2023, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred in the South Shore neighborhood, where Dupree was inside a vehicle in an alley in the 7800 block of South Jeffery Boulevard. At approximately 10:46 p.m., gunfire broke out, and Dupree was struck multiple times throughout the body. They were pronounced dead at the scene by police.
Dupree was born in Indianapolis and later relocated to Gary, Indiana, where they attended Thea Bowman Leadership Academy and 21st Century Charter School of Gary. Before moving to Chicago, Dupree had established and operated two businesses: Private Protection Division LLC and Hondo IV Lawncare & Snow Removal LLC.
The Chicago Police Department's Area Two detectives are currently investigating the shooting, but as of the latest reports, no one is in custody. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has ruled Dupree's death a homicide following an autopsy.
Dupree's death marks the 32nd reported instance of a trans or gender nonconforming person who has died by violent means in 2023. Among these, 24 have been trans people of color, and 17 have been Black individuals.
Dupree's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral expenses. The page uses Dupree’s name assigned at birth alongside their chosen name and male pronouns.
The community has been mourning the loss of Dupree, who was known for their industrious nature, their willingness to embrace their truth, and their love for various aspects of life, including Chicago sports teams and athletes, political figures, and favorite TV shows.
