On January 15, 2024, 33-year-old China Velma Mitchell was fatally shot during a domestic dispute in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood. The incident occurred at an EZPAWN store on the 4800 block of South Ashland Avenue, where Mitchell was shot in the head and chest. She was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
