On February 24, 2024, Rodrigo Olivan, a 28-year-old resident of Waukegan, Illinois, was fatally shot along with another victim, Ana Gil, 24, also from Waukegan. The incident occurred in the 400 block of Powell Avenue in Waukegan. The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded to the scene around 4:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Olivan and Gil with gunshot wounds. Olivan was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, while Gil was shot multiple times and was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was part of a broader crime spree involving two suspects, Tylo Eddins, 18, of Killeen, Texas, and Ishawn Z. Pitts, 19, of North Chicago. Earlier on the same day, Eddins had carjacked an Uber driver in Chicago by pretending to be the designated pickup, stealing a silver 2020 Kia Sorrento. Eddins then drove the stolen vehicle to Waukegan, where he committed an armed robbery in the 500 block of South Genesee Street, robbing a victim of $20 while wearing a mask. After the robbery, Eddins picked up Pitts from his residence in Waukegan.
The two suspects then drove through the 400 block of Powell Avenue, where they encountered Olivan and Gil walking on the sidewalk. Eddins fired shots at both victims, and then instructed Pitts to shoot them and "finish them off." Pitts allegedly fired numerous shots at the victims. The shooting was described as "senseless" and "for no reason," with no connection between the victims and the suspects or any ties to criminal activity.
Following the shooting, the suspects fled northbound in the stolen Kia, which later crashed into a fence in Zion. The occupants fled the vehicle, and detectives linked the crash to the homicide, leading to the recovery of evidence related to the crimes. Pitts was arrested on February 29 on an outstanding aggravated robbery warrant and confessed to shooting the victims. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is being held at the Lake County Jail. Eddins was arrested in Killeen, Texas, on February 28 for an unrelated burglary case and other crimes, and he awaits extradition to Illinois to face six counts of first-degree murder.
Ana Gil, who had been shot multiple times, including nine times according to some reports, died on February 27 from complications related to her injuries. The Lake County Coroner's Office confirmed that both Olivan and Gil died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds and complications thereof. The case has been described by authorities as "an absolute travesty" due to its random and senseless nature.
