On February 24, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred in the 400 block of Powell Avenue in Waukegan, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of two victims, including Ana Gil, 24, of Waukegan. The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded to the scene around 4:20 p.m. after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found two individuals who had been shot. Rodrigo Olivan, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Ana Gil, who was also shot multiple times, was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and listed in critical condition.
Despite her critical condition, Ana Gil managed to call 911 after being shot nine times, which aided in the immediate response by emergency services. However, she succumbed to her injuries on February 27, 2024, due to complications from the multiple gunshot wounds, as confirmed by the Lake County Coroner's Office.
The investigation led by the Waukegan Police Department revealed that the shooting was part of a broader crime spree linked to two suspects: Tylo Eddins, 18, of Killeen, Texas, and Ishawn Z. Pitts, 19, of North Chicago. Eddins had earlier carjacked an Uber driver in Chicago, stealing a silver 2020 Kia Sorrento, and then committed an armed robbery in Waukegan before picking up Pitts. The two suspects then drove through the 400 block of Powell Avenue, where they encountered Olivan and Gil walking on the sidewalk. Eddins fired shots at both victims and then instructed Pitts to "finish them off," leading Pitts to fire numerous additional shots.
Following the shooting, the suspects fled in the stolen Kia, which later crashed into a fence in Zion. The occupants fled the vehicle, but detectives linked the crash to the homicide and recovered evidence related to the crimes. Pitts was taken into custody on February 29 for an outstanding aggravated robbery warrant and confessed to the shooting. Eddins was arrested in Killeen, Texas, on February 28 for unrelated crimes and is being held in the Bell County, Texas Jail while awaiting extradition to Illinois.
The shooting was described by Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain as a "senseless shooting" of two completely random and innocent individuals with no ties to the suspects or any criminal activity. The case has been characterized as an "absolute travesty" due to its random and intentional nature.
