On February 26, 2024, Simon Brown, a 59-year-old father, was fatally shot in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of Chicago's South Side. The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. near the intersection of 71st and State streets. Brown was on his way to buy a lottery ticket for his wife when he became an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of a shootout.
The shooting resulted from a verbal argument between two armed suspects, which escalated into a shootout on the sidewalk near several businesses. When police arrived, they found two victims with gunshot wounds: Brown, who was shot in the stomach and left hand, and a 49-year-old man who was shot in the head while using a nearby ATM. Brown was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The 49-year-old man was left in grave condition with life-threatening injuries.
Another victim, a 50-year-old man, was shot in the leg during the incident and was dropped off at an area hospital, where he was reported to be in good condition.
Police quickly located one of the alleged shooters, a 54-year-old man, near 71st Street and Wabash Avenue. He was taken into custody after being found with gunshot wounds to his leg and hand and was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition. A gun was recovered from this suspect. However, the second suspect, who allegedly exchanged fire with the arrested individual, fled the scene and has not been identified or taken into custody.
The shooting was part of a recent surge in violence in Chicago, marking the third mass shooting in two days. The incident has prompted community leaders and local officials to call for action to address the ongoing gun violence. Alderman William Hall and Pastor John T. Boston of the Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church have expressed their commitment to finding ways to stop the violence and have planned community meetings to strategize on how to make the neighborhood safer.
The Chicago Police Department's Area One detectives are ongoing with their investigation, and authorities are hoping that security cameras in the area will help identify and locate the second alleged gunman.
