On February 26, 2024, Jon Rucker, a 47-year-old man, lost his life due to gun violence in the Greater Grand Crossing area of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred on Monday evening near the intersection of 71st and State Streets. Rucker was using a nearby ATM when he was struck by gunfire.
The shooting was a result of an argument between 53-year-old Trivell Pruitt and another man, which escalated into an exchange of gunfire.
Unfortunately, two innocent bystanders, Jon Rucker and 59-year-old Simon Brown, were caught in the crossfire. Brown was buying a lottery ticket for his wife at the time of the shooting and died shortly after at a hospital. Rucker, however, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
Trivell Pruitt has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to Simon Brown's death. Pruitt was among those injured in the shooting and is currently in jail awaiting his trial, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 19, 2024. The police are still searching for the second shooter involved in the incident.
The community of Greater Grand Crossing came together to pray for peace and discuss an action plan to reduce violence in the city. The gathering, held at Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church, was attended by family members, including Simon Brown Jr., who expressed his gratitude for the community's support during this difficult time.
As of the current date, no murder charges have been filed in connection to Jon Rucker's death, although the investigation is ongoing.
