On March 2, 2024, 17-year-old Jeremy L. Smith was fatally shot during a large gathering in the South Loop area of Chicago, Illinois. This event was part of a so-called "teen takeover" near the Southgate Market shopping mall, where over 100 young people had assembled. Jeremy, who was set to graduate from Ombudsman Chicago South later that year, was not expected to be at this gathering; his family believed he was going out with friends at a different location.
