On April 13, 2024, a tragic mass shooting occurred in the Back of the Yards neighborhood of Chicago, resulting in the death of 9-year-old Ariana Molina and injuring 10 other individuals. The shooting took place around 9:18 p.m. near 52nd Street and South Damen Avenue during a family gathering to celebrate Ariana's father's sister's confirmation.
Ariana was fatally shot in the head and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Comer Children's Hospital.
The incident involved multiple victims, including three other children: a 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy who were both shot multiple times and remained in critical condition, and a 9-year-old boy who sustained a graze wound to his left pinky finger and was in good condition. The adult victims included seven individuals, ranging in age from 19 to 40, with Ariana's mother being shot in the back and her father in the leg.
The shooting is believed to have been a targeted act, with police indicating it was likely gang-related. However, Ariana's father, Jose Molina, strongly denied any gang involvement by the family, stating they had no history of such activities and were planning to move out of the neighborhood due to increasing violence.
Witnesses reported seeing a black sedan approach the area, from which unknown individuals began shooting into the crowd before fleeing southbound on Damen Avenue. Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert for 18 gunshot rounds and found multiple people shot, initiating life-saving measures on the victims.
As of the initial reports, no arrests had been made, but the community and city officials were actively seeking justice. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced a response plan that included a mass canvassing event and increased police patrols at nearby schools. The community also organized marches and vigils to demand an end to the violence.
On September 3, 2024, it was reported that Octaviano Romero, a 39-year-old Chicago man, was charged with murder in connection to the mass shooting. Police recovered 75 shell casings from the scene, further evidence in the case against Romero.
