On June 22, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, resulting in the death of 16-year-old Marvel White. The shooting took place around 6:38 p.m. at Ogden Park, located in the 6500 block of South Racine Avenue. According to police reports, Marvel White was involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown offender, which escalated to the point where the offender pulled out a gun and fired shots, striking Marvel in the chest and legs.
Marvel was immediately taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He was a rising junior at Dyett High School for the Arts and had been at the park with friends, including a visit to the pool, before the altercation occurred.
The investigation into Marvel's murder is ongoing, and as of the current date, no one is in custody. The Chicago police continue to seek information and have urged anyone with knowledge about the incident to come forward. To aid in the investigation, a $5,000 reward is being offered by parents who have also lost children to gun violence, through the group Purpose Over Pain.
Marvel's family and community have been actively seeking justice, distributing flyers and going door-to-door in the neighborhood to gather any clues that might lead to the identification and arrest of the perpetrator. The Restorative Project has also joined the efforts to canvas the neighborhood and engage the community in the search for justice.
The incident has had a profound impact on the community, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in Chicago. Marvel's death occurred less than 24 hours after another 16-year-old CPS student, Benicio Gomez, was fatally shot in a separate incident in the Budlong Woods area, further emphasizing the need for community action and support.
