On August 18, 2024, at approximately 4 a.m., Rockford Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 4500 block of Governor's Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered 26-year-old Martayvious Dequan "Tay" Evans suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Evans was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Two additional victims, a 28-year-old male with gunshot wounds to his arm and hand, and a 35-year-old female with a gunshot wound to her lower leg,
were treated at local hospitals and released.
Following an extensive investigation, the Rockford Police Department's Violent Crime Unit identified 26-year-old Julian Patten as the primary suspect. The Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office authorized a charge of first-degree murder against Patten, who was already held in the Winnebago County Jail on unrelated charges. Authorities noted that the investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be filed. Patten, like all accused individuals, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Martayvious Dequan Evans was born on January 6, 1998, in Rockford, Illinois, to Mona Evans and Orlando McDaniel. He graduated from Auburn High School in 2016 and was employed as a forklift operator at the Wisconsin Cheese Factory. Evans was of the Muslim faith. He is survived by his parents; sisters, Dynasti Arrington and Amari Square; brother, Curneilus Arrington; three nieces, Da'nyla, La'niyah, and Kylnee; maternal grandmother, Barbara Evans; paternal grandmother, Louise Pettis; and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Wardell Evans, and paternal grandfather, Oscar James.
Services were held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at Soar Assembly in Rockford, with visitation preceding the funeral. Arrangements were completed by Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home Inc. The Rockford Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community assistance in ongoing investigations.
