Carlos A. Grays, a 39-year-old Black male from Chicago, died on September 5, 2024, after gunfire erupted on a late-summer night in North Lawndale. Just after 11 p.m., he and another man were standing in the street in the 1500 block of South Kenneth Avenue when someone approached and opened fire.
Neighbors heard the shots split the quiet and saw people scatter; moments later, first responders were rushing Grays to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead before midnight.
Police and the Cook County medical examiner said Grays was struck multiple times, including in the back of the head. The second victim, a 42-year-old man, was hit in the abdomen, shoulder, and buttocks and was listed in fair condition at Mount Sinai.
Records identified Grays as living in the 1300 block of South Christiana Avenue, a few streets east of where he fell. He was 39 years old, and the loss of his life was noted by gun-violence trackers that record the dead with a few stark lines: name, age, city, date.
Witness accounts given to reporters pointed to a quick, cold departure: the shooter fled in a dark-colored sedan, leaving shell casings and a block gripped by flashing lights.
Detectives from Area Four opened a homicide investigation, and in the immediate aftermath police said no one was in custody. Subsequent local coverage through that weekend echoed the same uncertainty—an unnamed gunman, a car disappearing into the night, and a case with no arrest to announce.
