Marcel Hannah, a 30-year-old African American male, was tragically shot to death on June 9, 2019, in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. in the 6600 block of South Evans Avenue. Marcel, who was affectionately known as "Little" by his family, was a quiet and charismatic individual who worked two jobs—one as a warehouse order taker at a Dr. Pepper facility and the other as a manager at the Willis Tower Skydeck.
He was also a DePaul University student and was deeply loved by his family and friends.
On the night of his death, Marcel had taken an Uber to his girlfriend's house in Woodlawn. Shortly before the shooting, he called his brother, expressing concern that some men were trying to jump him. During the call, his brother heard Marcel shout something along the lines of "what the f—k" followed by seven gunshots. Marcel's brother knew something was terribly wrong when the call went silent. According to police, Marcel got into an argument with someone in a blue Chevy Impala and was shot in the head. However, his family disputes this account, stating that the only argument Marcel had was with his girlfriend.
Marcel's death came just months after his cousin, Darrien Wilson, was also fatally shot in the South Shore neighborhood. The family was devastated by the loss of two young men in such a short span of time. Marcel's aunt, Shronda Parsons, described him as a loving and respectful person who steered clear of violence and confrontation. Despite this, Marcel had a minor criminal history, including a 2006 charge for criminal trespass to a vehicle and building, as well as a few minor gambling charges. However, police sources indicated that Marcel was not "known to police" in any significant way.
As of now, there have been no arrests or suspects identified in connection with Marcel's murder. His family has urged the police to question his girlfriend, but no further details have been provided about the investigation. The case remains open, and the family continues to seek justice for Marcel, hoping that someone will come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of his killer.
