Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and saw a man and a woman fleeing toward Halsted Street immediately after the shooting. Patel, an actuary, succumbed to his injuries that night.
Chicago police arrested Josalyn Fowler, a 25-year-old woman from Thornton, a suburb
south of Chicago. Fowler has been charged with murder and attempted armed robbery in connection with Patel’s death. Authorities stated that she “participated in” the shooting, though it remains unclear whether she was the one who pulled the trigger. Fowler had a prior conviction for unlawful use of a weapon in 2022, for which she ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge.
The Cook County medical examiner ruled Patel’s death a homicide, confirming that he died from a gunshot wound to the chest. His family and community have expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing him as intelligent, kind, and generous. His brother, Neil Patel, established a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for causes aimed at reducing gun violence and seeking justice for Kevin. By April 24, the fundraiser had collected over $11,700.
Local officials, including 43rd Ward Alderman Timmy Knudsen, praised the community’s efforts in providing crucial camera footage and information that contributed to Fowler’s arrest. While Fowler has been charged, police have also questioned a second person of interest, though no charges have been filed against that individual at this time. Authorities continue their investigation into the case, and Fowler is expected to appear in court for a detention hearing.
