Russell Douglas Novak, a 70-year-old resident of Plano, Illinois, was fatally shot in his home on September 27, 2024. The incident occurred in the 3800 block of Pratt Street, where Plano police responded to a report of gunshots around 6:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Russell Novak with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite attempts at life-saving efforts, Novak succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting was part of a home invasion, and police quickly identified a suspect and a vehicle believed to be involved in the crime. A pursuit ensued from Plano to Aurora, ending in the area of Route 34 and Eola Road. The suspect, identified as Nicholas Novak, 36, of Aurora, exited the vehicle with a gun and pointed it at a deputy. In response, the deputy and a Plano officer discharged their firearms, resulting in Nicholas Novak being fatally shot. He was taken to Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead from a single gunshot wound.
Nicholas Novak was revealed to be the son of Russell Novak and his ex-wife. Russell Novak is survived by another son, two brothers, his partner, a granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. He was known in the community for his love of bowling at Parkside Lanes and Strike and Spare, as well as his passion for his Harley. He was described as a kind and caring person loved by many.
Following his death, a GoFundMe campaign was set up to fund a celebration of life and to benefit the American Heart Association in Russell Novak's memory.
