In the late afternoon of Valentine's Day 2023, a dispute between teenagers in a Norcross, Georgia neighborhood tragically escalated, leaving 13-year-old Jaeden Travis fatally wounded. The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. on Windward Lane, where officers found the young male in the street near his home with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to his parents, Jaeden had been the target of bullying and threats from another teenager for several months prior to the shooting. On the day of the incident, a car carrying other teens reportedly pulled up to the Travis home. Jaeden's father, Harold Travis, recounted that his son went outside, and soon after, he heard gunfire. The father stated that his son had taken a BB gun outside with him, but the other teen was armed with a real gun. He tragically witnessed his son go down in the middle of the street.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Gwinnett County Police Department investigated the case and handed its findings to the District Attorney's Office. Authorities later deemed the shooting a 'justifiable homicide,' stating that evidence indicated Jaeden had pulled a weapon first. While no murder charges were filed, one teenager, identified as Manuel Ramirez, was charged with tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a minor. Jaeden's family expressed their profound grief and dissatisfaction with the outcome, believing the act was a setup and that all involved should have faced more severe charges. His mother, Jaequitta Milerson, and father lamented the senseless violence that took their son's life, a boy who enjoyed basketball, music, and fishing.
