In the early morning hours of June 7, 2023, the life of 39-year-old Christopher Dale James Suttles was tragically cut short in a wooded lot on Merchants Way in Brunswick, Georgia. At approximately 2:45 a.m., Glynn County Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired at a location known to be a homeless encampment. Upon their arrival, they discovered Christopher Suttles suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate life-saving measures, including CPR,
performed by the officers, Suttles succumbed to his injury. He was transported to Southeast Georgia Health System by Glynn County Fire Rescue, where he was pronounced deceased. The investigation into his death would continue for over a year before a significant breakthrough was made.
On August 19, 2024, the Glynn County Police Department arrested 28-year-old Alex Etheredge in connection with the fatal shooting. Etheredge was subsequently charged with one count of homicide in Suttles's death. According to an incident report, a witness at the encampment told police that someone had entered the camp and made a threatening statement just before the shooting. Another witness reported seeing two males, one white and one black, running from the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that more charges may be forthcoming.
