In the early morning hours of June 17, 2023, the life of 42-year-old James Brinson, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Augusta, Georgia. Responding to a call of a shooting at approximately 8:06 a.m., deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office arrived at the 2800 block of Lumpkin Road to find Brinson in the yard of a residence, having sustained at least one gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Wellstar MCG, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 8:43 a.m.
For over a year, the case remained without a public resolution, leaving a void in the community for a man remembered as a talented musician and a successful landscaper who had graduated from Josey High School. The investigation, however, continued quietly until a significant breakthrough occurred. A friend of a potential suspect came forward with crucial information, reporting that they had been threatened. This new lead provided investigators with the leverage they needed to move forward with the case, unraveling the events of that fateful morning.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was preceded by a heated argument between Brinson and a woman named Garnett Gaines. During the dispute, it is alleged that Garnett called her 22-year-old son, Mikeem Gaines, to come outside. Authorities believe that Mikeem Gaines then fired the shot that killed Brinson before leaving the scene. It was also reported that his mother delayed in calling for emergency services.
On August 26, 2025, more than two years after the incident, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office announced the arrests of both Mikeem Gaines and his 45-year-old mother, Garnett Gaines. They were taken into custody around 5:15 p.m. and each charged with one count of murder. Following their arrests, they were booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. Public records indicated that Mikeem Gaines had a prior felony burglary charge from 2022, while his mother had a minor criminal record.
